Literally.
I signed up for a floral design class I found in the Yellow Pages, and my instructor would dumpster dive flowers for us to practice with.
Garbage flowers.
Very glamorous beginning. 😂
I had no idea at the time that flowers would eventually take me across the country—and into a completely different world.
I worked with flowers in California, in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains (aka Utah), in New York City, and plenty of places in between.
But New York was its own education.
It was the block where everyone knew my name.
The vendors knew me. I knew them. I bought flowers and had them delivered all over the city—for retail shops, weekly corporate accounts, weddings and events.
And the scale could get a little ridiculous.
Weddings where floors were installed OVER SWIMMING POOLS just for the weekend.
Early-morning installations at iconic New York City locations.
Truckloads of flowers.
Tiny details that mattered enormously.
Tiny details that absolutely did not.
Flowers that arrived perfectly.
Flowers that absolutely did not.
Later, I worked as a designer alongside some incredibly talented floral teams, which gave me another view of the same world: what it actually takes to turn all those stems, plans and crazy ideas into something beautiful.

For almost five years, I spent the wee hours of the morning at the flower market on 28th Street in NYC.
NOT EVERYTHING MATTERS.
ABSOLUTELY.
A LOT OF THINGS DON’T.
DON’T MAKE THIS HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE.
AND WHAT REALLY, REALLY DOESN’T.**
Professional advice. Reasonable expectations.
YOU FIGURE IT OUT.
YOU MAKE ANOTHER CHOICE.
AND THE WEDDING MOVES ON.
IT MEANS I KNOW WHAT MATTERS.
FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS, LET'S HAVE SOME FUN DOING IT.
